Carolyn and I have been on a mission lately to get more comparison reviews up on CandleFind. It’s no easy feat considering the amount of candles one has to burn of the same scent. Can you say fragrance overload? I know Carolyn’s had her fill of Strawberry scents for the next decade so I decided to let her off the hook with this one and took on the “Battle of The Watermelons” review. I love all melon scents so it was no sweat off this chickadees back!

Watermelon is a very popular fragrance and just about every single company out there carries this scent so you can imagine how many are available… hundreds! I wish I could review them all for you but there’s no way I could burn that many and have my review done in a month. I’m fast but not that fast. :-) So, I chose six companies to review, a couple of big names and the rest were smaller companies.

I was really looking forward to this review because I love the scent of watermelon but ironically… I’ve never burned this scent before in a candle. I had never thought about it before 'till now but all the melon scents I’ve burned have either been cucumber melons, cantaloupes or honey dews. I’ve always had this scent on my list of “to burns” and have plenty in my inventory but never got around to burning them. That’s what I get for having such a huge inventory! So, now I was really looking forward to trying a bunch of watermelon scents.

For Battle of The Watermelons, I decided to buy a huge wedge of the real thing just so I could sniff it for this review… I wanted to see how the real McCoy compared to all my candles. In all honesty, none did and that really surprised me. All the scents I tried if put up against the real thing smelled candy’ish and very sweet and smelled like you would think a watermelon should smell. Real watermelon, “in my humble opinion” doesn’t really have a strong scent but instead, I think tastes better than it smells. That’s why I think it’s not an easy fragrance to duplicate. After smelling the real thing and then tasting it, whoa, what a difference! Watermelon tastes much better than it smells. It’s almost like tasting it helps you imagine what it should smell like.

Well, to close this intro, I hope my watermelon candle feast helps you in some small way… it was fun burning them all and writing this review so good luck on your own watermelon quest. There are SO many choices out there so I didn’t even break the water so to speak with my measly 6 in this review but it’s at least a good start.

Candle #1: Yankee Candle - “Juicy Watermelon”

Hard to believe but I still haven’t officially reviewed Yankee yet… I plan on one real soon and already have one in the works but it’s not quite finished yet. I’ve heard so much about Yankee, good and bad and always one to draw my own conclusions; I wanted to give them a try for myself. I’ve actually been accumulating a stash of Yankee candles and tarts over the past year catching some killer sales but have had so many other candles to burn and review, I just never got around to writing one up for Yankee. Oops :-)

Juicy Watermelon is one of Yankee’s new spring/summer scents recently released and one to never pass up a melon scent, I nabbed it pretty quick (both jars & tarts). When I bought them, I hadn’t even had a watermelon review in the works but it worked out perfect that I had already bought them. Can’t have a scent comparison without a Yankee candle now can we?

Did I like Yankee’s Juicy Watermelon? I’m sad to report that although this scent was decent, I wasn’t really thrilled overall with the scent of my candles or tarts. The fragrance itself was lacking something and I’m not quite sure what. I want to say sweetness and authenticity but the main factor for my dissatisfaction was the lack of scent throw. This fragrance had almost no scent at all. I had two candles burning in my great room and I was lucky if I could get a slight whiff walking past the candles. My tart was no better. Normally when I melt tarts, they’re super strong and scent my entire family room. After I had it melting awhile, I could smell it but it wasn’t strong and it just didn’t do anything for me. I even tried melting some in a tea light burner and electric burner to see if there was a difference and there was none.

The scent itself smells okay, not really authentic compared to the other watermelon scents from this review… it was just “ok." I don’t know if anyone else has tried this scent and came to the same conclusions or not but my opinion is there is definitely much better out there. My recommendation would be to go with another company if you’re after that sweet juicy watermelon scent.

Candle #2: Lee Ann’s Natural Soy Candles - Watermelon

This is my first experience with Lee Ann’s soy candles. I placed a big order over a month ago with the intention of reviewing her line. I still plan on doing an official review but I wanted to add her watermelon candle to my big watermelon review first. I bought 2 candles in this fragrance to burn in my great-room and I also bought some tarts in the same scent to compare the two. I’m really starting to gravitate towards tarts now because they give such a strong scent throw.

My candles were 16oz apothecary jars and single wicked. The wax color was white. The scent description on Lee Ann’s site is very simple which is, “Fresh and Juicy”. When I first opened the lid to this candle and smelled it, my nose definitely liked it. It smelled sweet and sugary with that yummy melon scent that smells so fresh and wonderful.

I’ve burned these candles every day for over a week and have to report that the scent throw was very light. I could smell it every once in awhile but it just didn’t saturate my room with scent like I wanted it to. The only time I could really smell the fragrance was when I was close to the candle. So, I ended up moving one candle into a smaller room and it seemed to do much better there. The tart on the other hand rocked! It was very strong and one tart fragranced my entire family room with scent all day long. That’s definitely what I prefer and this little tart came through with flying colors. The fragrance was awesome and had that juicy sweetness I love with melon fragrances.

I did enjoy LeeAnn’s Watermelon and will definitely order it again but not in a candle. I loved the tart and will stick to that with this particular fragrance when ordering from this company.
