What a great company! I found it thanks to Candlefind and am really glad I did. Until recently I pretty much burned only Yankee Candles. In my quest for different (and lower priced) candles to try, I stumbled across Candlefind, and from Christina's review and those of other members I decided to try The Spotted Hog.
Spotted Hog specializes in bakery scents, which I love, especially around this time of year. I had a hard time making up my mind on which scents to try. Finally, I bought one or two tarts each in a bunch of different scents: Iced Cinnamon Rolls, Bananas Foster, Jelly Donut, Raspberry Zinger Cake, Hot Orange Danish, Strawberry Lemonade, Iced Oatmeal Cookies, and Carrot Cake. The Spotted Hog has a wonderful "tart bakery" line which I just couldn't resist, so at my daughter's urging I bought some mini tarts shaped like cupcakes (complete with sprinkles) in Orange Chiffon Cake. Since the jar candles were so reasonably priced, I also added an 18 oz apothecary jar in Lemon Pound Cake.
My order arrived within a week (and I made my husband call me at work when it was delivered!):) The first tart I tried was one of the little cupcakes in Orange Chiffon Cake. WOW. The scent description on the website says "you will be blown away by this scent," and they weren't kidding. Not only was it incredibly strong (one mini cupcake filled my whole 2,000+ sq foot house - I could even smell it in the basement), but it was unbelievably true to life. I smell the orange, vanilla and cake flavors, of course, but this fragrance actually has a WARM smell to it, like cake does when it's baking in the oven. I've never experienced a scent like this before and I've been burning candles for years.
The next scent I tried was Carrot Cake, and to be perfectly honest it didn't smell at all like carrot cake to me or to my family. It didn't smell bad - in fact, the fragrance was quite complex and wonderful - but just not what I was expecting.
The Lemon Pound Cake jar candle was quite as strong as advertised. It had a strong emphasis on the lemon with just a hint of vanilla to it, so if you're looking for more of a sweeter scent you may want to try something else. However, I really liked it and am saving it for the spring and summer months when I like to burn the fruit scents. The double-wicked jar burned really well with no sooting or tunnelling. I burned it for four hours and it looks like there's barely any wax gone, so I'm sure it will last a long time.
Today I tried the Bananas Foster tart - it came in a two ounce cup, so I cut it in half and burned it in two tart warmers - one upstairs and one down. Another great fragrance and incredible throw! I plan to buy this one again. The tart filled my entire house within 15 minutes and lasted for at least nine hours.
My overall impressions: I will definitely order from The Spotted Hog again. The quality of both the burn and the scent throw is really hard to beat, especially when you consider the low prices. The packaging, labeling and jar designs are cute, and I love the tart bakery and the fact that you can choose your own wax color for the jar candles. The website is attractive and easy to navigate, and they offer fast shipping at a flat rate.
- UPDATE 3/28/07-
My earlier review of Spotted Hog is pretty long already, so I'll keep this short. I placed another order and have been burning some more of their scents in tart form. Most of them smell great, but some of them - like the Carrot Cake and Lemon Pound Cake I mentioned earlier - just aren't what I expected. One example is the Spiced Pear scent, which didn't smell at all like either pears or spices until it had been burning awhile, and then only slightly - it mainly smelled perfumey. (I know it wasn't just my nose because both of my kids asked me separately what scent I was burning...and with all the candles I burn they're pretty experienced at identifying scents. They didn't think it smelled bad but said this one was "weird.") Flipping back through some earlier reviews of this company I've noticed that others have had similar experiences.
All in all though I still feel that Spotted Hog is a great company in both their products and customer service. In the future though I think I'll just stick to their tried-and-true scents like the Orange Chiffon Cake and Mixed Berry Crumble.

Purchased 3 candles- Granny's Pie Crust, Blackberry Jam Cookie, and Peach Apricot Medly along with spa and banana nut bread melts.
I really like Blackberry Jam. Nice throw and true scent. I also like Banana Nut, which is as close to banana bread as I can imagine. Very yummy. Not crazy about Granny's Pie Crust, which is a disappointment since it got so many positive reviews. Just can't figure it out. Not that strong a throw and not a distinct smell. Just smells like the oven is on, but can't make out what's in it!. Maybe it will grow on me, but I tend to avoid burning it in favor of my other favorites like pureintegrity candles and the blackbery jam from this company. Haven't tried spa or Peach Apricot medley yet, but the cold smell is nice, unlike the cold smell of granny's pie crust. Would definitely order from them again as the shipping and overall service was good as are the prices. Candles also burn clean with no tunneling.

I have looked at this company for well over a year and just figured it would be the same ole, same ole, so I never ordered, but OH MY GOODNESS!, this is definitely not the same ole when it comes to their tarts! Yes, I am impressed I am not a tart burner. Reason being, I just never got the throw from a tart as I do burning a candle. Normally I burn 2-3 candles in my liv. rm. and at least 2 if not 3 in my kitchen (because of the openess of my home and I like to smell what I am burning). I was sent a free tart with my candle order and decided to give it a try. The scent is fizzy pop, but not the fizzy pop that I am used too. This tart has a different, better scent than any fizzy pop I have ever burned and has a WOW!, zip to it! I had it going no more than 15 minutes and it not only scented my kitchen, but as well my dining rm. and liv. rm. and is now beginning to scent my utility rm.!...from just 1 small tart!!! I am not using an electric tart burner, but am using a tart burner that uses a t-light (I think burners work better using t-lights). I hate to say it, but I think Spotted Hog may have just turned me into a tart user Gotta buy some more tart burners now. I also tried 2 candles (one did not have enough scent throw for me but did smell very good and the other was just out of this world, awesome!, as was the fizzy pop). They are replacing the awesome scent for me (my wicks went low flame but it still had a great throw regardless). The customer service was outstanding. I wish they had more scents to choose from tho (more flower, perfume type, musky scents & chocolate variations). I gave a 10 (and am leary of giving any company a 10 anymore because it seems after you get an order or so, the quality drops). But given the reviews for this company, I do not think that will be a problem. I have a VERY happy nose!

Dont forget to put insurance on your candles.

I just received my candles today. I ordered 5- 16oz jars. All of my candles BUT one arrived intact. Unfortunetly my poor Banana Nut jar didnt make it, It was broken badly. Unfortunelty for me i forgot to put insurance on my shipment so there wasnt anything the company could do for me.
I was determined I was going to smell that lovely Banana Nut candle one way or another, so I went and removed all the broken peices of glass from the jar making sure all glass shards were removed. After that I took a butter knife and cut a tart size section out of it(Its a soy candle so it sliced like butter) and placed it in a tart warmer.
FOLKS! Let me tell you that Banana Nut candle is as fine as wine! I have the tart warmer in the kitchen and just that little small peice has filled the entire bottom floor of my home (2300sq ft.) Goodness but I'm delighted!
Just remember folk, they are not responsible for unforseen shipping mishaps so dont be like me and forget the Insurance.

I have ordered a couple of times from this company and have been very happy with my candles. I ordered a honeydew and strawbeery lemonade, and they both smell wonderful and authentic with a very strong scent throw. They burn nicely you just have to trim the wicks often. They offer soy candles also which the honey dew was soy and it had a very strong scent throw still and burned real nice. I like this company alot and will be ordering from them again.
